■ Product Description
[ Album Introduction ]
'A craving for humming, Humming Instinct'
Six months after the EP [Endangered Species] and single [Home], Humming Instinct returns with the EP [Summer Homework], using various genres of music to explain their unique worldview to listeners. Among these, the central theme that runs through each of their albums is 'ontological exploration.' That is, they ponder why we exist, interpret the problems we face, and try to solve them through action. However, finding answers remains difficult. EP [Summer Homework], which tells this story, attempts to find its own path amidst the repeated loss of direction.
'The suffocating cycle of summer nights, summer homework'
People living in the present, regardless of age, live to complete tasks forcibly assigned to them within the flow of time. It doesn't matter if these tasks are what we want to do. We are instilled with a sense of responsibility to solve repetitive problems without finding purpose or reason. Homework that we must face, even if we dislike it, does not disappear when we close our eyes. And inevitably, in situations where we must push our limits, we throw ourselves into the pressure. This continuous stress makes us yearn for a break from the tasks. Nevertheless, simply encountering others in similar situations might make us feel as if summer homework will finally end.
'The slowing carousel, the returning inspection time'
[Summer Homework] tells the story of a child pressured by homework during the limited time of summer vacation. The child learns various emotions under the pressure of having to solve the homework. With homework returning like a nightmare every night, the child feels helpless about the impending inspection time, and eventually collapses into anger under the repeated pressure of squeezing their brain like toothpaste for the homework. Sometimes, encountering hazy smoke, the child inhales it as if mesmerized, becoming momentarily detached from their situation. Amidst this emotional turmoil, the child runs away from homework and heads to the playground. There, they find temporary comfort by meeting friends who, as if by an unspoken promise, gather at the carousel that cannot be spun alone.
However, the carousel slows, inspection time returns, and the child's expression becomes inscrutable once more. This child might be our past self, or perhaps our present or future self.
[Nightmare]
- July 1Xth, Day O -
I couldn't finish my homework yesterday, so I had to do more today.
It was too much and hard to do.
Homework remained, so I couldn't sleep.
If I can't finish my homework, I have scary dreams.
Homework must be a nightmare.
[Toothpaste]
- July 2Xth, Day O -
Brushing my teeth feels like homework too.
Just like words for homework, the toothpaste ran out.
Mom told me to squeeze it up from the bottom.
No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't do it on my own.
There's a rotten taste in my mouth.
[Smoke]
- August 1Xth, Day O -
I left the house to avoid my parents' nagging.
I wish my homework would suddenly be finished by tomorrow morning.
Then a disinfection truck passed by.
Running after the smoke, my throat started to sting.
Somehow, I felt refreshed.
[Coward]
- August 2Xth, Day O -
Not wanting to be home, I went to the playground.
It wasn't just me; there were lots of kids.
We all rode the spinning ride I wanted to ride so much.
We went home as the sun set.
Everyone probably still had homework left.
Still, my steps felt light today.
I should do more of my remaining homework before sleeping.
