[Jesus Loves Me]
There is a beauty that cannot be explained by reason. Many contemplate and study the beauty that humans perceive. They express their own thoughts and feelings about what is so beautiful, why it is beautiful, and what meaning it holds. While human reason, accumulated over a long time, can excellently explain this beauty, the mere fact that sentient beings gave birth to a culture of creating, sharing, and enjoying music is already a supernatural phenomenon that cannot be explained by reason alone. The fact that something flows and resides within us, allowing us to feel musical beauty beyond reason, is profoundly mysterious.
Bassist Hwang Hogyu finds the source of this beauty in religion. While this recording of [Jesus Loves Me] uses hymns as its subject, it would be a pity to view and understand this recording solely through a religious lens. There is a concern that someone unfamiliar with hymns might miss out on a valuable opportunity to feel and share the modern beauty of this music. Hwang Hogyu's musical prowess, exemplified by his selection for the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, grew out of the church. If we can set aside the preconceived notion of "religious music" as a way to understand his identity as a great musician, we will come closer to the musician's musical expression and beauty.
The new album, [Jesus Loves Me], is a gospel album that rearranges hymns into jazz. By reinterpreting familiar hymns, it remembers the divine being that brought him into existence, adding inspiration and creativity to present his unique beauty through music. For this recording, two musicians active in New York, the heart of jazz, collaborated. John Ellis played saxophone, and acclaimed technician Kim Jong-kook participated on drums, enhancing the recording's completeness. Simultaneously, they all achieved a spiritual communion in their music based on the common creative foundation of the church. This album beautifully reinterprets a total of nine songs, including the title track ‘Jesus Loves Me’ and the Korean gospel hymn ‘I Love You, My Jesus.’
