Bringing together loss and recovery, memories that drift
I am Summer's debut EP album 『Future Diary』
Meetings are followed by partings. Love that seemed eternal passes, and days that seemed endless flow inevitably, eventually reaching an end. We are powerless before time. Ultimately, what remains for us is only the question of how long we can postpone farewell. Everything passes—perhaps we are realizing this obvious truth over a lifetime.
『Future Diary』 is a kind of sci-fi. This is because it records a future that has not yet arrived, borrowing strength from the past and present. Even if a relationship ends, memories do not easily fade. Moments spent together seep into the remaining daily life in various forms. People who have lived different lives met by chance, shared memories, and explored each other's intimate corners nearby. Through beginnings and endings, we have clearly changed somewhere.
What I let go of during a certain period—where did all those things go? Time in 『Future Diary』 never flows linearly. The time we spent together is still within me. The voice singing 'Too Much to Forget' doesn't just leave the past in the past.
In that sense, this album comprehensively deals with encounters, partings, and life thereafter. It collects memories that are invisible but float somewhere.
The first track, an instrumental piece titled ‘sneakers,’ was created by imagining an unexpected person quietly and mysteriously entering someone's life at some point. It is a song that depicts the moment of falling for a stranger.
The second track, ‘still summer,’ began from the memory of struggling with the heat last summer due to a broken air conditioner. The lethargy brought by the sweltering heat evokes a period of wandering in life. 'I' softly sings that difficult days might continue without end, just like the many summers yet to come, all while waiting for someone to release 'me' from a confined space.
The third track, ‘Too Much to Forget,’ was imagined by looking at the grief of those who have lost their pets and contemplating life after their own cat's departure. This song, which seems to trace daily life after loss, nevertheless says that not everything disappears, that the time spent together remains, showing the possibility of recovery despite great sorrow.
The last track, ‘Hopefully,’ is a song dedicated to a friend who has passed away. It is a kind of letter and imagination, written recalling the friend's words, who disliked acquaintances pitying her even amidst her arduous battle with illness. Imagining her being cured in the distant future and someone falling in love with her—instead of clumsy comfort, this song expresses a sincere hope that she wouldn't leave, depicting her still vivid and lovely image, a love song that keeps us, far apart, still together even now.
The hazy sounds and melodies richly portray the image of memory fragments slowly being erased and blurred, floating after a parting. Listening to this album, one might be deeply immersed in moments that can never be returned to, or imagine the sorrow that will be felt in the very distant future. There are memories that do not fade, even if one leaves. 『Future Diary』 is a process of mourning the times we spent together.
In the lost place, an unknown light enters. A certain warmth remains.
