"Restrained ambient sound and mystical melodies
A Greek myth that seeks peace and balance of mind
Producer Jinwoo's debut album <Parnassus>"
The album <Parnassus> is inspired by the Greek myth of Parnassus, depicting a protagonist's journey to overcome inner conflicts and adversity, contemplate the world, and find serenity. While a story from myth, it also portrays the ultimate state of mind he seeks. Below, I've reproduced the album introduction he sent me directly.
“<Parnassus> is a fiction depicting the conversations between those who seek wisdom from the Muses on Mount Parnassus and the Muses who answer them. The tracks in the album are named after the Muses, with lyrics and atmospheres crafted to suit their symbols and roles. Mount Parnassus, located in Greece, is home to the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. In ancient Greek mythology, it was revered as the homeland and domain of the nine Muses.
The Muses are known in Greek mythology as nine goddesses of the arts, proficient in various fields of art, and inspiring poets and artists with creativity and talent. They are also goddesses of wisdom, sought by characters in myths when they seek wisdom and truth. While today the term "muse" is commonly used to refer to someone who inspires writers or artists, the nine Muses of Parnassus each have their own unique roles and symbols.”
All vocal tracks in <Parnassus> were created with SURYEON. SURYEON, who has collaborated with Jinwoo for a long time, participating in lyrics, composition, and vocals, is a singer-songwriter who presents her unique musical grammar within ambient and indie-folk genres, capturing everyday abstractions. The album cover is a work by artist Suo, who creates idyllic visuals based on Hanji (traditional Korean paper). Mastering was handled by Te Rim, known for traversing hip-hop and electronic music, showcasing a unique musical world, and having participated in albums by artists like Woo Won-jae, CIFIKA, and SE SO NEON.
CD design was handled by artist Ha Hye-ri, a designer and photographer who published <Another World Story>, <Angel Test>, and participated in works by Shin Hae-kyung, Yeoyuwa Seolbin, and others. Based on Suo's illustrations, a triangularly designed lyrics booklet expresses the state of serenity Jinwoo wished to portray.
Commendations
Track 2 “Kleio” and the title track “Hike” were the most impressive. I felt that the album's brilliant strengths were compressed within them. However, the true value of this album lies in the delicate and tightly woven organic connection between the tracks. If you listen from the first track to the last, I believe you will feel as if you've read a mysterious fairy tale, or briefly visited another place.
-Shin Hae-kyung
An affectionate heart discovered in myth shapes sound. And before us unfolds this clear and peculiar mountain landscape. The silhouette of a longed-for dance, willingly letting the Muses loose within oneself.
-Cacophony
Snow, beginning in pristine silence, shatters finely and pours down. The moment I felt the warmth from the first snowflake on my body, I knew this was a harmless avalanche that wouldn't simply engulf me, and I cautiously stepped into the mountains. Before I knew it, I was standing in a grassy field where the snow had melted. I hear melodies swimming, shaking off leaves, and the whispers of gods huddled, gathering tiny branches, amidst the snow-mist thickets that hadn't quite melted. Then, if I close my eyes and open them again, I suddenly awaken at the foot of a snow-capped mountain with a sense of déjà vu. In a place where foreground, midground, and background embrace and intermingle with myth, the echoes approach abstractly, and sometimes as clear landscapes.
The tracks on Jinwoo’s debut album ‘Parnassus’, while seemingly not overly complex in their layers, efficiently create sufficient complexity, swirling and breaking apart with every element. The eight tracks naturally push and pull each other intimately, creating beautiful resonance. SURYEON’s dreamy voice, featured on the album, sometimes kindly guides us from the heart of the mountain. The meticulously designed sense of space, textures, and the dynamic sound throughout the entire narrative will also be key appreciation points of the album.
…”Adding to my aforementioned delusional impression, it is even more cautious for me, as a fellow musician, to dare say, ‘I like this music for these and those reasons.’ So, in front of him, I ultimately offer only a trite remark like ‘The music is truly good,’ which, though sincere, might only invite suspicion. Then, turning away, I shamelessly and carelessly recommend this album, even if it means cornering those who seek the mountains and pouring out my clumsy impressions. All the while, with tightly pursed lips, harboring a secret and earnest nuance.
