Introduction to Goethe and Music
[Poongwoldang: Goethe and Music]
A special album curated by Poongwoldang, Korea's leading classical music store!
German culture without Goethe is unimaginable.
The same applies to music.
The great German literary figure Goethe lived eighty-three years with music close to him, personally experiencing the historical changes in music from Baroque to Romanticism. What kind of music did Goethe love? And what music did Goethe's poetry give birth to?
The encounter between Goethe and music is captured in two albums. The first album is titled 'Salon Concert at Goethe House,' and the second is titled 'The Eternal Feminine.' While the first album covered the music Goethe loved and Lieder based on Goethe's poetry, the second album focused on works inspired by Goethe's masterpieces such as 『Egmont』, 『Faust, Part I』, 『Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship』, 『West-Eastern Divan』, and 『Faust, Part II』, with a particular emphasis on the songs of the female protagonists Goethe created: Gretchen, Mignon, and Suleika.
When poetry and music met, German culture achieved an astonishing leap. With these two albums, you can vividly experience the rich exchange between the great writer Goethe and music.
