In 2017, Shin Hae Gyeong's EP [My Reversible Reaction] was released. In 2020, Shin Hae Gyeong's first full-length album [False Dream, False Dream] was released, and in 2024, Shin Hae Gyeong's second full-length album [Strange Scenery] was released. The three albums specifically introduced in Shin Hae Gyeong's discography take the structure of prequel - main story - sequel. The narrative continues in the order of [Strange Scenery] - [My Reversible Reaction] - [False Dream, False Dream]. It took 7 years from starting with the main story, introducing the sequel, and finally introducing the prequel. I admire the story completed over a long period of time and add to the writing as a listener for 7 years, or as a substitute for the creator. I hope it will be a more friendly guide to understanding the creator's grand story.
A month before the release, I received 9 tracks of the ga-mix version of the music with a short text message: "There are still many elements to be corrected, but I think it is at a level where it is not difficult to understand the album." Shin Hae Gyeong's personal thoughts written in the email: "The story has an end. Nevertheless, I had to draw a speaker who tries to move forward. That part was the most difficult." The speaker of [Strange Scenery] is unknown, but listeners and creators who have heard [My Reversible Reaction] and [False Dream, False Dream] know one thing. The end of the story is ultimately the downfall with you, and the only place where you can meet again is in a dream. While listening to [Strange Scenery] knowing the end, I shed quite a few tears. Or, I felt heartbroken imagining the creator who made [Strange Scenery] knowing the end. Nevertheless, listening to this album knowing the end is what the creator intended.
01 To the Cradle
It is the track that depicts the beginning of all narratives and the meeting with you. There is no need to worry yet. The upcoming tracks will fully unfold the story of love and meeting that has not appeared in Shin Hae Gyeong's music until now. Nevertheless, there is anxiety. He ends up writing lyrics like "You know, even if I can't see you again." It is said that lyrics inevitably resemble the creator. As an aside, Shin Hae Gyeong is a person who often worries even in normal times. Again, it is said that lyrics inevitably resemble the creator. The lyrics Shin Hae Gyeong writes are unpretentious. Estelle, a word meaning star in Persian. There are many scenes related to flowers in Shin Hae Gyeong's music. He directly mentions them in song titles such as 'Paper Flower Garden' and 'Like a Blooming Season', and also appears in lyrics here and there like 'Geranium' and 'Lilac'. (Lilac appears in the unreleased song 'Love'.) If 'flower' was a medium for guessing sadness in Shin Hae Gyeong's music, this album unfolds the opposite story with 'star'. The sound, which showed shy feelings with a simple instrument composition earlier, expands like fireworks in the 2nd track, depicting the moment love is achieved. Love is the process of walking the night you used to walk alone in step with you. Shin Hae Gyeong gives meaning to the blurry night sky by introducing Esther, a star.
03 Fish
Like a scene where a god appears in a myth of a certain religion, you 'come down' on a clear day, and like the ability of any god, you 'shine' the dark night. To the speaker of the story, you are like a god. As a matter of fact, fish have symbolic meanings in many religions. Shin Hae Gyeong compares the grand concept of faith to love. Love is about absolutely believing and worshiping.
Personal thoughts: I thought about the creator who gave the title fish to a song that sings about love. Shin Hae Gyeong does not choose the repeated phrase in the lyrics as the title of the song. Is it my assumption that he decides the song title first and interprets it metaphorically to give his own interpretation?
04 Wedding
It is not easy to see stars in the night sky. Shin Hae Gyeong said that thinking of the concept of 'star' makes him feel like he is dreaming. Seeing clear stars in the night sky, which cannot be dark enough because the ground is too bright, is like a dream to some people. In this album, Shin Hae Gyeong conveys the romantic image of love by frequently introducing stars. The title song of the album, 'Wedding', is full of star images. It has the most splendid song title, is located at the peak of the story, and plays its role. Even if it is a somewhat old-fashioned opinion, can we deny the symbolic meaning of the vow of marriage in the narrative of love?
05 Nightmare
From the moment of meeting to the fruition of promising eternity, it is complete. A fact you may have forgotten, this story ultimately ends with the downfall with you. The sound reminiscent of the first track of [False Dream, False Dream], 'Reminiscence', begins. The traces of 'Danae', 'Ennui', and 'Give Me Everything' that appear next bring [My Reversible Reaction] into the story. From now on, it is time to watch the story without forgetting the ominousness.
06 Paper Flower Garden
It is a song that was released earlier as a pre-release of the album. 'Paper Flower Garden', which played a significant role in understanding the atmosphere of the album at the time of its release, has undergone another change as it is included with several other songs. The shortened song length and the more splendid sound are dramatically contrasted by being placed after 'Nightmare'. "Geranium I saw in a dream one day" The geranium that appeared in the speaker's dream earlier is a withered geranium. "I'll forget the sad dreams" The speaker who saw the withered geranium needs a paper flower garden that will never wither. As an aside, I asked Shin Hae Gyeong what color the geranium that has appeared so far is. The answer was red geranium.
07 Melon Scent
"I want to eat melon." It is known as the last words left by poet Yi Sang at the time of his death. The traces of Yi Sang, who has been constantly mentioned in Shin Hae Gyeong's name and music, appear again this time. Shin Hae Gyeong is active in hiding or revealing the traces of those he likes. The consistency of writing 'some day' as 'some day', and releasing a song of the same name 'Damdadi' are examples of this. The album's narrative and sound, which had been running at full speed, enter a lull as they welcome 'Melon Scent'. Shin Hae Gyeong brought the words left by poet Yi Sang at the time of his death. In the quiet moment of facing death, the speaker and you quietly faced the moment represented by death.
