Song Hyoung Seok's 1st Studio Album SURVIVE
The 1st full-length album 『SURVIVE』 is a studio album featuring six single albums released from 2021 to 2024, along with the new song "Space Travel" (우주여행). It encapsulates five years of musical life and tells the story of a new journey.
The dream since childhood, the dream of making my own music, is finally realized now.
There was a time as an elementary school student, learning piano, when I wanted to be a composer and participated in children's song composition contests (all eliminated in preliminaries), but even then, I never gave up this dream.
Decades later, I realized that I wanted to be called a 'musician,' but I didn't actually want to make music. Creating music and desiring it were two different things. That's why true artists create various things from a young age, while some don't gather courage until they're cornered.
In any case, I am a person with a scientific sensibility who cannot execute something, whether it's skiing or throwing a ball, without understanding how it works. Even when trying to make music, my concern was what to extract from the countless references I've heard.
Firstly, the foundation of my sensibility seems to be classical piano learned in childhood, especially Chopin. His accompaniment techniques and the sense of dispersing harmonies feel like the basis for my musical perception. Next is the influence of 80s pop, which dominated my adolescence. For rock, it's New Wave, especially The Police. For rhythm, it's hard to abandon the feel of Funk due to Prince's influence. I've listened to a lot of music, but Brazilian music, especially Samba and MPB, which I discovered after my thirties, showed me that what I wanted had already existed for decades. Even today, those songs fill my library.
As I combined the basic forms of these elements, I realized that everything I liked shared similar characteristics: minimalist, acoustic, and off-kilter. And that was the path I needed to take.
Track Information
1. Good!
This song was created with a Sanullim-esque melody that suddenly came to mind. It connects a Jackson 5-like progression with a Genesis-style time signature change, and the desired Prince-esque funk. The lyrics, 'I like anyone,' are a meaningless repetition, stemming from the realization that I am someone who cannot say anything.

2. I'm Disappointed
This song was hastily made, so I'm less attached to it, but it was surprising how well people responded to it. It often played on the radio and became a representative track. The influences of The Zombies and Fleet Foxes are evident. Superficially, it was written out of disappointment with Tottenham's performance, but it actually contains political intentions.

3. Hold Me
I tried to write a typical ballad. The lyrics were taken from Sheila E's "Hold Me," which I love. Giorgio Moroder's synthesizer arpeggios evoke a sublime feeling beyond simple nostalgia, reminiscent of Italian classical music, and I wanted to capture that resonance in this song.

4. Your Tears
Originally, it was an instrumental guitar piece. I changed it into a song because of its tango-esque style. The lyrics describe a middle-aged man hesitating in love, referencing the atmosphere of Kim Kwang-jin or Yoon Jong-shin. I think it suits my voice quite well.

5. And Then There Will Be No One
This is a folk song that failed while trying to create a Led Zeppelin-style riff. At the time, I was absorbed in Bossa Nova guitar, so I followed its typical chord progressions. Some progressions even made me wonder, "How did I create this?" The lyrics are about the death of my friend and psychiatrist, the late Professor Lim Se-won, and the sudden passing of Shin Hae-chul.

6. When People Speak, Listen a Bit
I focused on what I really wanted to say to people: "Please understand what people are saying." I wanted to make it like Fiona Apple, but it gradually became too playful and drifted into a 90s house music vibe. Honestly, I want to remake it.

7. Wednesday
It was originally a Bossa Nova song. Only the chords are the same; the melody is completely different, and frankly, the original was better. The problem was that I was inspired by New Jeans and wanted to create similar music. While I'm not entirely happy with the result, the process of programming complex rhythms was enjoyable.

8. Space Travel
This was the longest song to create. The foundation started with a guitar riff from the respected Milton Nascimento. I wanted to evoke a 70s MPB vibe but couldn't quite achieve it, leading to several restarts. During the arrangement process, influences from Secos e Molhados, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Pat Metheny, and Kim Dong-ryul were subtly blended.
The lyrics originated from a dream I had as an elementary school student: flying into space in a rocket made of planks or paper, powered by a briquette fire. The scene of the roof flying off and stars pouring in was memorable. However, now that I'm older, space has become a void, and the desire to fly has turned into a desire to leave Earth.

9. Live! (Inst.)
This is a twin track to 'And Then There Will Be No One.' The question of why one should live cannot be explained in words. I believe that the mechanical movements of my body and mind themselves reveal the mystery of life.
