tearliner's first full-length album in 11 years [MUSICOMANIA]
Indie band tearliner, who debuted in 2004, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and is releasing its third full-length album [MUSICOMANIA], which has been in preparation for a long time. It is the final destination for songs that were worked on from time to time while working as a music director, and it is a full-length album in as many as 11 years since [Gray Garden]. Although not intended, the songs made over 20 years from 2003 to 2023 are appropriately mixed, containing different stories depending on the era, season, and emotion. This album contains the drama of tearliner's 20-year life as it is.
The album title ‘MUSICOMANIA’ refers to a music maniac who is fanatically obsessed with music, and soon refers to tearliner himself. A rock kid who was immersed in music all day long since childhood imitated a musician by holding drum sticks, carrying a guitar, pressing keys, and singing into a microphone with DIY (Do it Yourself), and then the coincidences and inevitabilities that led him to live the life of a musician, the alpha and omega, are expressed in melodies and included in the album. Through music, we want to add emotion to the small moments of life and deliver comfort and joy. Unlike the various expressions that have been expressed through music directors, the joys and sorrows of these emotions have a thicker and richer color in this album.
The album cover is based on the concept of a cassette tape that tearliner listened to so much that it led to the present. The album cover and booklet were drawn by German artist ‘Stephan White Kresse’, who became friends because they liked each other's creations.
Individuals are islands that exist separately, but at the same time, they are connected as one through the sea. May the melodies and sound waves of the album [MUSICOMANIA] be delivered to them through the waves and reach the beaches of each island. I hope that it will hit the rocks and sand of the island and create white spray everywhere.
[MUSICOMANIA] Song Introduction
01. Lovesick (feat. Sunjin)
This song is over 20 years old since the demo was recorded (2003). When they reunite with their ex-lover in a dream, they whisper not to break up again. Ironically, lovesickness is cured by love, although it leaves scars of regret or longing. The song is simply divided into the first half with lyrical vocals and the second half led by guitar and piano performances, raising emotions. 'Sunjin', who participated as a vocal feature in the OST 'Blooming Story' of the NETFLIX drama [Love Alarm], which he was in charge of as a music director, and received a lot of love, breathed life into the song again.
02. HEARTSTRINGS
It is a typical tearliner-style song that uses stringed instruments thickly, but does not bring vocals and rock instruments forward or backward, but produces equal sound. Strings and piano flow like a dream with mournful vocals, touching the listener's heartstring. After composing the first skeleton, it was completed over 12 years, adding flesh little by little with the efforts of 9 players, lyricists, and recording staff. The elegant lyrics were written by Annie of ‘Love X Stereo’, and a string quartet including cellist Seong Ji-song played the strings. The work log is here.

03. Moon Rises, Love Falls
I loved it like a hot summer, but after time passed and love faded, the feelings are expressed with a mournful melody and calm vocals. ‘Moon Rises, Love Falls’ dramatically metaphorizes these feelings. The sweet guitar sound that wraps around the overall atmosphere of the song was played by Kang Ji-hoon, a tearliner session member and member of the acoustic duo ‘low-end project’. Thanks to this, an emotional sentiment flows on top of the small sound base, boosting the emotion of the melody.
04. My Aporia
Intense and lo-fi guitar performances that seem out of place, delicate and timid vocals, and cheerful dance-style drums with applause combine heterogeneously to create a unique charm like a romance of the Avengers who traveled to the Joseon Dynasty on a time machine. ‘Aporia’ is a Greek word meaning dead end, and in philosophical terms, it means ‘difficulty, unsolved problem’. This song sings about individual difficulties, which may be a complex reality for some, an unsolved problem, the frustrating pandemic situation at the time of work, love with a lover, or a relationship with a boss. The guitar performance and arrangement of an unreleased demo song recorded in 2006 were used as is, and lyrics were added 14 years later. Through this, you can enjoy tearliner's early lo-fi sound and recent lyrics at the same time. Detailed work log is here.

05. Love You, Stranger (Feat. Love X Stereo)
The embarrassing but not unpleasant feeling of suddenly finding love starts with the attractive guitar tone of the samba rhythm and flows on a cheerful and soft melody. ‘Love X Stereo’ vocalist Annie participated not only in writing the lyrics of the song but also as a chorus, boosting the song lovingly and richly. Unlike the tearliner style that contained growing pains, regrets after breaking up, and memories, it expresses bright, exciting, and the beginning of love, expressing a variety of colors. Detailed work process is here.

06. Because Haven’t Lived
It is a song with an attractive vocal that is thrown out in a simple rock composition that is straight and crisp. It sings that I am old but still young, that there is still a chance left, that I cannot die yet because I have never lived properly as I wanted, and that I will live freely according to my will in the future. A lo-fi sound was intended in the garage rock genre to express the will to live a free life. The music video, which tearliner directly conceived, produced, edited, and directed as a cottage industry, was acted as a vocalist by actor Lee Min-ki, a friend who matched the rocker image of the song, giving strength to the difficult promotion of indie musicians without an agency. The fascinating music video work log is here.

07. How We Lost in Melody (feat. Fromm)
It captures the image of lovers who love each other but have different thoughts, sometimes embracing and understanding, sometimes pushing away and conflicting, and getting lost and wandering in the melody. Singer-songwriter Fromm, with her simple sound and appealing low-mid range, participated as a feature, breathing a mournful and beautiful life into the song. At the same time, another arrangement of the male vocal version is included (track 12 ‘How We Lost in Melody’) to express various emotions in the same melody.
