Cellist Yang Sung-won, celebrating his 50th year in cello, returns with a new album featuring Elgar's Cello Concerto and Piano Quintet.
The album opens with the Cello Concerto, featuring the London Symphony Orchestra, which premiered the work in 1919 under Elgar's own baton, now led by Hans Graf. Yang Sung-won described it as "a work containing the elegiac moments of British music and the essence of Romanticism."
The Piano Quintet is another late masterpiece, rumored to have been kept by Elgar until his last moments, offering a glimpse into the composer's inner world. Pianist Park Jae-hong, violinists Song Ji-won and Lim Ji-young, and violist Kim Sang-jin participated in this recording.
Recorded back and forth between the UK and Korea, this album allows listeners to experience Yang Sung-won's half-century musical journey through Elgar's late works, born amidst the tragedy of World War I.
