There are no 'boundaries' in my music
Yoo Chae Hoon's third solo EP "Sfumato"
There is consistency in solo Yoo Chae Hoon's steps. It is that he is not bound by his starting point as a vocalist. This is strikingly different from showing the complete tenor as the leader of La Poem. Perhaps Yoo Chae Hoon's solo activity was a longing for popular music. It is to become a 'singing person' rather than a vocalist. His steps are in a different context from the so-called 'crossover', which combines two heterogeneous styles into one. When he sings a pretty ballad, he becomes a singer who suits the song, and when he sings a passionate song, he pours out raw, rough emotions. He erases the 'boundaries' of music and sings as the vocalist who best suits the song he sings. The diverse genres and styles he sings are not a vocalist's deviation, but the essence of singer Yoo Chae Hoon facing the song.
Like the previous album title "Impasto", this album title "Sfumato" is also an art term. The meaning is this.
'Sfumato: A shading technique that subtly changes colors like fog, allowing the outlines between colors to transition naturally without being clearly distinguished.'
The album title contains the meaning of showing music of various genres without boundaries, like the 'sfumato' technique that blurs the outlines of colors. And the five songs on the album faithfully follow the meaning of the title. The five songs are tightly connected by Yoo Chae Hoon's solid vocals and soft emotions, but each song is colored in a different style.
Among the five songs, 'Summer Poem (夏詩)' was chosen as the title track. The song introduction I received is a poem. 'Love in summer is always like that. Like a pouring shower, or like a lie, or like a song.' Yoo Chae Hoon sang that summer love that everyone has experienced like a poem. The shining scene in the stored memory seeps into the ear like a warm recitation.
'Rose Flower', which opens the album, is tragic and magnificent. It is a remake of singer Jang Sa-ik's representative song. It expresses another emotion by adding magnificent strings and brass to the emotion of the original song. What is Korean traditional music and what is vocal music...
The rock style attempts shown in 'Journey' and 'Dream' are also new. 'Journey' has a cool pop-rock sound, and 'Dream' has an emotional alternative rock sound. 'Journey' brightly expresses the firm will to find the way back to 'you', and 'Dream' also contains positive comfort that brightens the future together.
'City Sound', located at the end, contains Yoo Chae Hoon's own story. Unlike the romantic and positive feelings shown in the previous songs, a dark atmosphere fills the song. Yoo Chae Hoon's rough vocals, which seem to contain anger, are impressive. He sang about Yoo Chae Hoon's own difficult reality, who came to the city to pursue his dream, but still loves the city he cannot leave. It contains a strong will to fill the city he loves with his voice.
