Dream, dream, dream
“Scars and healing, darkness and light, the meaning of existence in the flow of time,
Ultimate beauty and ideals, and moments of yearning for them.”
<Liner Notes>
There are things clearly visible only to half-awake eyes. A subtle and hazy world between deep dreams and reality. A strange world where even the incomprehensible becomes a part of a moment. Holding a secret language, five dreams overlap, traversing between deep slumber and shallow consciousness. From beginning to end, this album wears the face of a dream, yet within it, one can fully and completely feel the warmth and ardor of someone stirring. ZANRYUPA's ‘Dream, dream, dream’ is a lyrical travelogue of dreams towards healing, yearning, and recovery.
The door to dreams opens. ‘Dreamcatcher,’ borrowing its name from Native American talismans, captures sparkling moments of time and poignant scenery at the entrance to dreams. Lyrics nestled between warm, spreading starlight-like guitar riffs are filled with unpredictable scenes, present in reality yet soon slipping away like a powerless body. The door to dreams opens, firmly grasping the listener's hand with an unfinished narrative and leading them into a world of emptiness.
Following fluidly as if sinking into the abyss of sleep, ‘Dreamless’ has no lyrics, yet it slowly paints the bottom of a dream with only languid sounds. As if all the noise of reality has been swallowed, a void and emptiness prevail, and even breathing seems to calmly sink in. But at that moment, simultaneously, the narrative of the dream emerges and unfolds before our eyes. In ‘Dreamwalk,’ beneath your heart and gaze cast into a long dream, instruments gradually crescendo, and the yearning to fill the deficiencies within the dream quickly builds and dissipates. We break through the wavering boundary between dream and reality, between faded sight and mind, and land in ‘Dreamland.’ In the heart of the utopia painted by the dream, the repeated lyric, ‘Don't listen to anything,’ seems to refer to a certain moment achievable only through silence. One nobly floats through a quiet dream, but soon the body trembles and the heart vibrates.
The final track, ‘Dream, dream, dream,’ foreshadows the end of the dream journey and simultaneously the beginning of our lives and new dreams. It gathers fragments of dreams, layers them over the guitar riff of the first track, and ultimately returns to the starting point.
These are five sudden dreams, or a seasonal narrative woven in five parts built by ZANRYUPA. From longing, yearning, tranquility, and deficiency, to the repetition that begins anew. ZANRYUPA passionately paints the recurrence of emotions within dreams, like circulating warm blood, like blood that dies if it stops. And they unearth the sounds of endlessly moving vitality from within dreams. The song has ended, yet we seem to remain in a dim dream. Amidst the beautiful and eternal afterimages that you and I will encounter.
