Binudoduk (Soap Thief), Clear and Transparent, Layers of Life
Binudoduk is an indie band formed in 1997 by cultural critic and singer-songwriter Nam Seung-hee (vocals/guitar) and Shin Dong-sun (bass), who met via PC communication. From its early days, the band actively performed at venues such as Club Bbang, Freebird, Jammers, and Master Plan, establishing itself as a hidden gem in thedae indie scene. Defining themselves as a 'playful band,' they presented short, impactful, punk-yet-folk style songs with pretty, cheerful melodies and unique lyrics.
After releasing the demo [Binudoduk] and [Bbang Compilation] in 1999, they added a folk color to their 2003 EP [Acoustic Cat]. In 2006, they redefined their identity as a modern rock band by releasing the maxi-single [Lilac] with a five-member lineup featuring Jang Tae-soon on drums, Michael Glass on first guitar, and Lee So-yeon on keyboards.
Bassist Shin Dong-sun, who suddenly transformed from an art student majoring in oriental painting, obtained a medical doctorate, then moved to Japan to research neurobiology for over 10 years and worked as an anatomy professor at a medical university. During this time, he was involved in various performances, album productions, and authored jazz bass textbooks. He has since returned to Korea, where he serves as a professor in the Webtoon and Animation department, and continues to play bass for Binudoduk.
Subsequently, due to Nam Seung-hee's long period of childcare, the band remained dormant. In the fall of 2017, vocalist Nam Seung-hee and bassist Shin Dong-sun reunited to release the digital single [On a Windy Day]. During her childcare break, Nam Seung-hee learned vocal music, adding Italian and German to her linguistic skills. At Shin Dong-sun's suggestion to utilize these abilities, they formed a separate project group called Rainbow Wings and produced and released a <5 Foreign Language Children's Songs Medley>.
Recovering from the impact of the COVID-19 period, they began new album work in the winter of 2023, completing demos exchanged between Japan and Korea. The album [Carefully] consists of 9 tracks recorded and refined at Tone Studio in 2024. It captures inner stories of walking carefully again through a life that is painful, heavy, and sometimes oppressive, expressed with clear vocals and layered emotions.
Binudoduk's music, which always tells sincere stories and remains ever-present through time, once again touches listeners' hearts with an honest voice within its subtly lovely melodies.
Kim Seong-dae, a popular music critic, once described Binudoduk's music as “pure music harvested from a field of organic creation.” This is indeed an apt description, as their melodies and lyrics are not mass-produced factory music but rather grown and gathered directly from life's garden. It is the natural taste of life, with no additives and barely any seasoning. When you step away from a noisy environment and encounter your true self, that moment might just be now, listening to Binudoduk's songs.
Following the release concert for the [Carefully] album in the fall of 2025, there are plans to release a ukulele-based album compiling unreleased songs, and then to return to electric guitar to create and perform a modern rock album. Nam Seung-hee's individual project of a harpsichord-based, classical-leaning OST-style instrumental album is also something to look forward to.
