10 Years, 6 Years, and a Tricycle
Brown Eyed Soul, 5th Full-Length Album [Soul Tricycle]
It has been exactly 10 years since Brown Eyed Soul released their 4th full-length album [Soul Cooke] in 2015. It has also been 6 long years since [It’ Soul Right], the half-album for their 5th album, was released. Too much time has passed for an album to be completed. We've always heard that making an album is more difficult than imagined for musicians. Especially if they create their own music and have been recognized for their musicality, the burden must be immense.
In September 2025, Brown Eyed Soul completed their 5th full-length album [Soul Tricycle] by adding the remaining half to the half-result they released in 2019. Where did the energy come from to shake off the heavy burden and complete the remaining half? The answer can be found in the album title, [Soul Tricycle]. 'Tricycle', a three-wheeled bicycle. Having run for over 20 years with a four-member lineup, they have now embarked on a new journey with a three-member lineup of Na-ul, Jungyup, and Youngjun. While this meaning may be embedded in the tricycle, a more important meaning contained in the tricycle is 'joy'. It signifies their intention to create music with a pure heart, enjoying it just like learning to ride a bicycle on a tricycle in childhood.
What about the result of this full-length album, completed with joy after 10 years? The first impression after listening to the entire album is its diversity. While the overarching framework of their music, 'soul', remains unchanged, the 14 tracks, including 6 previously released songs, encompass various styles from different eras. It feels like a comprehensive collection of over 50 years of Black music styles. Not only is there a diverse range of genres, but also a rich and varied array of instruments and techniques that have long been used in Black music. Of course, thanks to their accumulated experience and experimental spirit over the years, both the diverse styles and performances are top-notch. The mastering, which the members personally undertook in Japan, also contributed to the album's completeness.
Let's look at the diverse tracks on the album. The title track chosen is 'Our Moments'. It speaks of bygone, irretrievable times. The memories of those pure and shining moments are expressed in a 'contemporary pop R&B' style with 1990s sensibilities. It will deliver unwavering emotion to those who resonate with the music of that era, and to those who have loved Brown Eyed Soul's music.
The album opens with 'Soul Tricycle'. The sound of rain and jazz-infused guitar at the intro create an emotionally rich atmosphere. This song, announcing the new identity of Brown Eyed Soul, features 90s vibes crafted with 'Roland TR-808' sounds, a sophisticated Moog bassline, and elegant vocal harmonies.
Following is 'Maybe You Are Like This Too', which takes us back to the 70s. While typical soul rhythms and brass sections evoke memories of 70s soul, sophisticated vocal harmonies and clean sound make it feel surprisingly trendy.
'Love Scat' was created with Jungyup's band Cosmic Chips. This 60s Southern Soul-style track allows listeners to experience Jungyup's brightly undulating charm, as showcased in Cosmic Chips, from Na-ul and Youngjun as well.
'City of Flowing Night' combines 70s Philly Soul style with Brown Eyed Soul's distinctive ballad touch. Na-ul and Jungyup's Philly-style falsetto, added to Youngjun's stable vocals, delivers a new kind of emotion not found in traditional Philly Soul.
'Tonight We Are' is a mid-tempo contemporary R&B track that evokes 90s memories. Its emotional exhilaration brings a warm smile.
In 'Every Day You', Youngjun's style stands out. His unique style, which adds the romance of jazz to a smooth R&B ballad, evokes the Quiet Storm genre that dominated around the 80s. Delicate and restrained emotions, elegant melodies, and stable harmonies bring comfort.
The final track, 'Familiar Story', was created with Ecobridge. The song's narrative, which gathers and unleashes pent-up emotions, is impressive. We applaud the veterans' ability to transform emptiness into passion in just four minutes.
A highly complete album packed with 14 tracks, including 6 previously released songs. Because they remain ever-present, listeners can fully enjoy the album's music. The 'number 3' signifies completeness. We hope they continue to stand strong in their place, make music more joyfully than before, and gradually shorten the intervals between album releases.
