- So we can keep going -
It was in the fall of 2022 in front of a live club in Busan. "Dongsu, please produce our full album."
The Busan-based band Cheap.n.Sweet suddenly requested production. I usually liked Cheap.n.Sweet's music, so I was briefly worried about what would happen if I ruined it by producing it.
Still, I wanted to do it. Even if I ruined it, I wanted to add at least a word. I wanted them to think that if it failed, it was my fault, and if it went well, the members did a good job. That way, even if the album didn't do well, the band could look forward to the next one. I didn't want to see any more great bands release one album and break up. So I agreed.
The band seemed to have let go of everything while working on the album, but they were actually anxious.
"There aren't many rock stars who succeed when they're old. I want to be a rock star. I think it's already too late. I don't know if I'll keep performing. I feel sorry because I feel like I'm taking the place of younger friends."
Even at the moment they said this, I could see the desire burning in their eyes. Looking at their burning eyes, I thought that their anxiety was due to their desire to succeed as soon as possible and their confidence in their music. I wanted to draw out this confidence even more.
Cheap.n.Sweet's first full-length album contains the entire musical journey of vocalist Seong Gi-myeong, who has been in a band in Busan for nearly 20 years, and the members who encountered the music scene through Cheap.n.Sweet. 90s indie/noise rock, 2000s post-punk revival, and 2020s post-punk come together.
Perhaps the genre of rock music and the genres mentioned will not be popular in Korea. Nevertheless, Cheap.n.Sweet's songs on this album sound popular. The biggest reason for this feeling is probably the power of vocalist Seong Gi-myeong's voice.
Seong Gi-myeong sings with the mournful voice heard in 90-00s pop music programs, borrowing the image of a rough but fragile and precarious rock star. It's different from the punk voice we often see. However, this voice creates Cheap.n.Sweet's unique color and makes us listen to non-mainstream music again.
"I want to make enough money from music to live in an apartment." This is what the members of the band Cheap.n.Sweet say every day.
The profits earned from this album will not be enough to live in an apartment. It will only help a little with cigarette money or buying gukbap. There are really no cases of indie bands becoming huge bands like Oasis. Especially in Korea. Nevertheless, I think Gi-myeong hyung will be happy when this album is completed. Because he was able to make the album he wanted to make entirely under the unconditional support of his colleagues without anyone's interference, I think he will be a little happy even if he doesn't have a house in his own name.
Cheap.n.Sweet is an album that will burn away the miserable past. It's a noisy album full of the confidence of musicians.
I hope that you who are reading this will listen to the rock and roll presented by Cheap.n.Sweet. And I hope you come to the concert hall. So that the neighborhood rock star who wants to buy an apartment can become a real rock star.
