《A Poem of Sound (Literary Jazz)》
Heena Kim sings Korean literature — The birth of a jazz album infused with poetry
“Re-reading sentences of memories and emotions in the language of jazz.”
Vocalist Heena Kim, who has showcased sophisticated musical colors with her deep and elegant voice, is an artist with a wide spectrum in the Korean jazz scene, performing various genres including jazz and chanson with mysterious and refined sounds. Having been part of numerous bands and projects, she has established herself as one of the most remarkable vocalists today, creating delicate yet firm resonances with expressive power that combines both restraint and density, as a vocalist and songwriter.
Her first full-length album, 《A Poem of Sound (Literary Jazz)》, is a work that reinterprets Korean literature, which she has long cherished, through the language of jazz. Re-writing the emotional textures drawn from the worlds of Han Kang, Kim Sowol, and Baek Seok into melody and harmony, this album feels like a collection of poetry woven with sound.
The title track, 〈The Past Time〉, originating from Han Kang's novel 『We Do Not Part』, delicately portrays an inner journey of quietly confronting oneself amidst past pain and suffering. Heena Kim's understated yet precise vocals and the fluid, dense scat lines, seeming to compress various emotions, are impressive. The refined jazz arrangement quietly conveys feelings buried in the past, present emotions lived daily, and resolutions for the future, becoming a central axis that permeates the entire album's sentiment.
〈A Distant Day〉 and 〈Unforgettable〉 infuse Kim Sowol's language into restrained jazz harmonies, depicting contradictory love and poignant longing with contemporary sensibility. 〈Llueve en mí〉, unfolding over an exotic bolero rhythm, calmly whispers the farewells that could never be spoken, while the experimental track 〈Je ne peux pas le dire〉, composed solely of French lyrics, delves deeper into the essence of emotion through the void of "being unable to speak." Bassist Joonghyuk Kim's original composition 〈In The Long Winter〉 musically expresses the quiet silence and contemplation of winter, and the final track 〈My Dear Poet〉, inspired by Baek Seok's poem 〈Me, Natasha, and the White Donkey〉, expands imagination to a 'night of falling stars' instead of snow, interpreting it as a romantic jazz-pop.
The quintet's sound, featuring pianist Gayoung Bae, bassist Joonghyuk Kim, drummer Bomi Choi, and trumpeter Taehoon Hong, maintains consistent lyricism, moving between waltz, bolero, and straight eighths. Heena Kim's voice, which offers cool yet warm comfort and conveys emotions with a gentle third-person perspective, simultaneously sings poetry and becomes poetry itself, quietly permeating.
《A Poem of Sound (Literary Jazz)》 is not merely jazz borrowing from literature. It is Heena Kim's deeply contemplative journey, rewriting unspoken feelings into music.
Memories and moments that linger long flow between the tracks of this album, touching the listener's most personal recollections, and ultimately leaving a profound resonance like poetry.
