Jonas Kaufmann Sings Movie Music!
It is impossible to even imagine a movie without music. Music does not simply enhance the effect of images, but often evokes emotions that are more intense and lasting than the images themselves. Music can leave a strong impression even without visuals, but movies cannot achieve this effect without music. Even in the silent film era, people were well aware of this, so they mobilized pianists or small orchestras to accompany the visuals throughout the screening, and these live performances greatly contributed to the audience's emotional experience. Therefore, it is not surprising that from the early days of sound films, the demand for great composers was as high as that for famous actors and directors. Among them, Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Max Steiner are revered today as the fathers of film music. Their works in Hollywood became the cornerstone of a great tradition that extends from Franz Waxman and Roger Miklós, Bernard Herrmann to later Nino Rota, Ennio Morricone, John Williams, and Hans Zimmer. What if Korngold's music was removed from Errol Flynn's adventure films, or if Bernard Herrmann's music was absent from Hitchcock's classics <Vertigo> or <Psycho>? The impact of these works would certainly be reduced by more than half. Furthermore, I dare to argue that if it were possible to steal the emotional foundation that music creates in a movie, the movie would lose most of its effectiveness.
On the other hand, the dazzling success of early sound films was also due to singers such as Richard Tauber, Josef Schmidt, and Jan Kiepura, who were active in Berlin, as well as Janet MacDonald and Nelson Eddy in Hollywood. Mario Lanza was also a huge success in the film industry, and his 1951 film <The Great Caruso> opened the entrance to the world of opera to people of all generations.
As an avid movie fan and singer, I cannot help but be very favorable to all kinds of vocal numbers included in various soundtracks around the world, and perhaps this is why the process of searching the vast repository of film music to find the most beautiful works to include in the new album felt so enjoyable. The resulting <The Sound of Movies> album is a culmination of precious works recorded in over 80 years of film history. Whether inserted to support the visuals or treated as pure music, these works are all deeply rooted in a corner of my heart.
