Lim Jin-ok Daegeum Jajin Hanip
Teacher Lim Jin-ok is an alumnus of the National Gugak High School and Seoul National University, just like me. We had a lot of musical exchanges since our school days, but I would say that our real relationship began when we were serving in the military band of the Army Headquarters. As a friend who is closer than a friend when things are good, and as a reliable senior who is a support when things are difficult, we became closer than anyone else during our short military life.
While teaching at Suwon University, Teacher Lim Jin-ok enthusiastically taught his major, the Daegeum, to students and devoted himself to nurturing future generations. He also left a great mark on the development of the school by serving as the Vice President of Suwon University, beyond the College of Music. In addition, he fully demonstrated his versatile talents and was recognized for his artistry through his composing activities, starting with the Dong-A Music Competition Composition Award and winning the 8th Korea Composition Award, achieving remarkable results in creative activities. He also conducted the Seoul Metropolitan Korean Music Orchestra, the KBS Korean Music Orchestra, and the Busan Metropolitan Korean Music Orchestra in the field of conducting, and eventually served as the permanent conductor of the Daejeon Yeonjeong Korean Music Orchestra. After his honorable retirement, he continues his relationship with the school as an honorary professor at Suwon University, and contributes to the expansion of the base of the Daegeum and the development of traditional music through activities such as the representative of the Daegeum Jeongak Society, the director of the Daegeum Research Society, and the holder of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 20 Daegeum Jeongak. In particular, he is currently dedicated to various performances with the goal of developing our Jeongak as a member of the Yangju Pungnyu Association.
Then he told me that he was releasing a new album this time. It is truly welcome and joyful. Before the versatile steps in the Korean music scene that Teacher Lim Jin-ok has shown, everyone knows that the driving force that enabled him to continue those activities comes from the Daegeum, which he has honed for a long time. I have no doubt that this album will be a valuable album that confirms the source and potential of his musical achievements, and I recommend this album to you. Thank you.

<Introduction to Included Songs>
Gagok
Gagok is a song that contains Sijo poetry in a 5-chapter format, and the instrumental music including the Daeyeoeum of the prelude or postlude and the Jungyeoeum of the interlude becomes its accompaniment music. This song, also called Mannyun Janghwan, is a vast suite, and various instruments such as Daegeum, Danso, Sepiri, Haegeum, Gayageum, Geomungo, Yanggeum, and Janggu are used as accompaniment instruments. String instruments mainly form the framework of the song, and wind instruments decorate the framework, creating harmony and stylish charm, so it is evaluated as very elegant and refined music.
Gagok has Namchang and Yeochang, and each of them consists of Pyeongjo and Gye-myeonjo. There are 26 songs for Namchang and 15 songs for Yeochang, for a total of 41 songs. If the above 41 songs become one set, and if we consider that the high and low and curved expressions are slightly different for each song depending on the lyrics, there may be hundreds of songs. However, if you accurately grasp the basic flow of the first set for each song, you can become proficient in the accompaniment of many other songs.
This song, which is the accompaniment music of Gagok, is also often used as a solo piece for wind instruments. In this case, the Sepiri is replaced with Hyangpiri, and the Daegeum is played one note higher. Music of the <Jajin Hanip> system falls into this category.
This album features Daseureum, Chosudaeyeop (Cheongseokryeong), Dugeo (Agyangnu), Samsudaeyeop (Seokyang-e), Eonrong (Itaebaek), Pyeongrong (Woljeongmyeong), Gyelak (Cheolchongma), Pyeollak (Namudo), Pyeonsudaeyeop (Jingukmyeongsan), and Taepyeongga (Iryeodo) centered on Namchang Gagok Gye-myeon. The instrument composition consists of Daegeum, Geomungo, and Janggu.
Jeong Dae-seok
Professor Jeong Dae-seok of Dongbo (桐普) is a Geomungo player, educator, and composer who has raised the extensibility and popularity of the Geomungo, a Korean zither, to the next level. He is still passionate about inheriting and developing Geomungo music, encompassing everything from traditional music to modern creative music.
Professor Jeong Dae-seok has been following the lineage of Seong Gyeong-rin and Gu Yun-guk in the Jeongak field, and the lineage of Han Gap-deuk, Kim Yun-deok, and Won Young-je in the Sanjo field. He has been active in various fields in the music scene, serving as a member of the Seoul Metropolitan Korean Music Orchestra, and as the principal and leader of the KBS Korean Music Orchestra. He also devoted himself to nurturing future generations while working as a professor in the Department of Korean Music at the College of Music at Seoul National University. Currently, as the representative of the Jeong Dae-seok Geomungosanjo Preservation Society, he is contributing to ensuring that everyone can enjoy the contemporaneity of the newly developed Geomungosanjo.
In this album, you can feel the depth and unique tone of his Geomungo music harmonizing with the Daegeum, allowing you to feel the inherent beauty of Gagok.
