Lim Jin-ok Daegum Pyeongjo Namchang Gagok
What an artist must fundamentally possess is skill, and if art is added to this, it is usually said that they have entered the ranks of a master. However, there are many outstanding masters in art, but it is not easy to find an artist who also possesses virtue. If skill and art come first, a mind that deviates from the path arises, and I believe that they will soon remain in a self-centered world of art. Professor Lim Jin-ok is revered by us as a noble and respected artist by having long since mastered the path of art, the path of humanity, and the path of the world.
Personally, while spending a long time with Professor Lim Jin-ok's life and spiritual world, I was reminded of the Tao Te Ching by the ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu a lot.
The philosophy of the teacher's life and art practice is so similar to a passage from Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching that I would like to introduce it.
"Being and non-being produce each other, difficulty and ease accomplish each other, length and shortness form each other, height and depth complement each other, voice and musical instrument sound harmonize with each other, and front and back follow each other. Therefore, the sage does things without forcing them and bestows teachings without speaking."
Like this, Professor Lim gives natural enlightenment by showing through practice rather than artificiality, and I believe that all students will agree with this wholeheartedly.
Also, the world of art that Professor Lim Jin-ok is pursuing and practicing is thought to be Park Ji-won's Beopgochangsin (法古創新). If an artist does not have the mindset to seek newness (創新), they cannot be called an artist, and in order to innovate (創新), the mind to carefully examine the old (法古) will inevitably arise. This is evidenced by the fact that he won the Dong-A Music Competition Composition Award and the 8th Korea Composition Award, and served as the permanent conductor of the National Gugak Center and other organizations across the country.
After completing his important mission as Vice President of Suwon University and retiring, he is giving great strength and inspiration to his juniors by engaging in even more active activities such as becoming a Living National Treasure No. 20 Daegum Jeongak Transmission Instructor.
The precious sound source of the Manpasikjeok (萬波息笛), which is essential for our society in this era, has been unveiled to the world. I am very happy and grateful that we can all share this precious sound source that contains Professor Lim Jin-ok's art and spiritual world.

Gagok
Gagok is a song that puts Sijo poetry into a 5-chapter format, and the instrumental music including the Daeyeoeum of the prelude or postlude and the Jungyeoeum, which is the interlude, becomes its accompaniment music. This song, also called Mannyonjanghwan, is a vast suite, and various instruments such as daegum, danso, sepiri, haegeum, gayageum, geomungo, yanggeum, and janggu are used as accompaniment instruments. String instruments mainly form the framework of the song, and wind instruments decorate the framework to create harmony and stylish charm, so it is evaluated as very elegant and noble music.
There are Namchang and Yeochang in Gagok, and each of them consists of Pyeongjo and Gyemyeonjo. There are 26 songs for Namchang and 15 songs for Yeochang, for a total of 41 songs. If the above 41 songs become one set, and if we consider that the high and low and inflection expressions are slightly different for each song according to the lyrics, there may be hundreds of songs. However, if you accurately grasp the basic flow of the first set for each song, you can become proficient in the accompaniment of many other songs.
This song, which is Gagok accompaniment music, is also often used as a solo piece for wind instruments. At this time, the sepiri is replaced with a hyangpiri, and the daegum is played one note higher, and the music of the <Jajinhanip> system corresponds to this.
This album contains Daseureum, Chosudaeyeop (Dongchangi), Dugeo (Gureumi), Samsudaeyeop (Jeoktoma), Soyongi (Burani), Ulong (Samwolsamil), Urak (Jodaga), Eonrak (Byeoksachang), Upyeon (Bonghwangdaesang), Banyup (Samwolsamil), etc., focusing on Namchang Pyeongjo, and the instrument arrangement is daegum, gayageum, and janggu.
Min Eui-sik
Professor Min Eui-sik is a gayageum master from Yeongdong, North Chungcheong Province, the birthplace of Nangye Park Yeon, one of Korea's three great musicians. The music culture of Yeongdong and a deep curiosity about Korean traditional music that he encountered as a child became the foundation of his music, and now he is accompanying the gayageum in a realm of love that transcends his musical abilities.
After graduating from Seoul National University, Professor Min Eui-sik served as an operating committee member and principal player in the KBS Korean Traditional Music Orchestra, and then devoted himself to nurturing future generations as a professor at the Korea National University of Arts. From the early days of the opening of the School of Korean Traditional Arts, he greatly contributed to presenting the school's vision by strengthening the curriculum and educational environment, confirming his progressive side not only as a performer but also as an educator. With a doctorate in literature, he continues to be active as Professor Emeritus of the Korea National University of Arts, a member of the Sejong City Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee, and artistic director of the Nangye Korean Traditional Music Orchestra even after his honorable retirement.
Professor Min Eui-sik, who gives us inspiration and challenges regardless of genre, from traditional music to modern creative music, based on sincere musical interpretation, is playing the beauty and elegance of Gagok with Beopgeum on this album.
