Singer-songwriter Llwyd's second EP 'Laceration'
Talented singer-songwriter Llwyd, known for his captivating vocal range that beautifully transitions between chest and head voice, releases his second EP.
Following his first EP 'Luminous', released last April, Llwyd's second EP 'Laceration' — which embodies the meaning of the second letter 'L' in LLWYD — strives to present a more mature Llwyd musically, featuring a diverse collection of synth-pop ballads.
The EP 'Laceration' was completed through the joint production of Llwyd, along with Dr.JO, a renowned K-Pop producer who has written and composed many works for artists such as IU ('Lilac'), MSG Wannabe, MAMAMOO, TWICE, and NMIXX, and Y.nik, a member of the 400,000-subscriber YouTube channel 'BGM President' and a drama music/OST producer. It consists of a total of 5 tracks, including the title track 'Lizard', which likens the feeling of leaving a loved one to avoid getting hurt to a lizard shedding its tail and fleeing; the classic pop ballad 'Hair, Gym (Farewell)'; the dreamy synth ballad 'No Meaning'; the retro synth-pop 'Karma'; and an orchestral version of his previously released single 'Fill Me Up'.
This EP chronologically narrates the emotional changes that follow the wounds of separation, from their onset to healing. Saxophonist Jung Ji-yoon and pianist/composer Yang Ja-in, among others, participated, further enhancing its completeness.
1. Lizard
This title track opens 'Laceration' and is a retro synth-pop ballad with impressive, powerful synth sounds. It compares the avoidant desire to leave a loved one to escape pain to a lizard shedding its tail and fleeing. Starting subtly and gradually building to explosive vocals, it showcases a more mature Llwyd, who is both 'mainstream and musical.' Saxophonist Jung Ji-yoon's solo part is also a highlight of this song.
2. Hair, Gym (Farewell)
This classic pop ballad is inspired by the small clichés of those who cut their hair, exercise, and begin to groom themselves immediately after a breakup. Llwyd's emotionally deeper expressiveness and vocal ability shine through. The piano performance and string arrangement by pianist and composer Yang Ja-in further enhance its completeness.
3. No Meaning
This ballad, featuring dreamy synth sounds, actively emphasizes Llwyd's powerful vocal abilities. It speaks of emotions from a point in time after a breakup has passed. The song begins with a sudden sense of loss felt at the end of a hard day, singing of regret over what might have been if they hadn't broken up then.
4. Karma
This electronic track, a synth-pop genre piece with an impressive retro instrument texture, calmly sings of the detachment towards the endless process of repeatedly seeking love amidst loneliness after cycles of love and separation.
5. Fill Me Up (Orchestra Ver.)
Unlike the previously released single version, this track features a special string arrangement added for this album. It describes the process of a heart, once closed by wounds, slowly transforming as new love arrives, and it concludes the EP by signifying the ultimate healing of 'Laceration'. Llwyd's warm yet highly delicate tone and expressiveness shine above the emotional piano performance and string sounds.
