■ Product Description
- Release of Jazz Bassist 'Okcheon's 4th Full-Length Album, 飛上 (Ascension)
- The concluding follow-up album to the 3rd album [蒼天] (Changcheon)
- The most Korean, delicate, and profound jazz sound
Jazz bassist and producer 'Okcheon' is releasing his fourth full-length album, [飛上 (Ascension)]. Debuting in 2015 with [Koreatown] and entering the Korean jazz scene in 2016 with his first full-length album [Thank You], 'Okcheon' has consistently delivered highly accomplished jazz music through three full-length albums and numerous singles and mini-albums.
The clear theme of this 4th album, [飛上], is, as its dictionary meaning implies, 'soaring high'. If the previous 3rd album [蒼天] (Changcheon) expressed the world we live in through the metaphor of a blue sky, starting with 'life' and leading to 'gratitude', this [飛上] album marks the conclusion of that series, embodying the meaning of becoming a blue dragon and soaring high into the blue sky. Beginning hopefully with the first track 'On Beautiful Days', and moving through past days that were sometimes dark and painful like 'Melancholy' and 'Tragic Love', the 4th album [飛上] contains melodies that tell us that our lives will always rise again and fly high into the sky, following the light, much like the tracks 'Moon Dance' and 'Morning'.
01. On Beautiful Days
- As the album's opening, this track speaks of beauty with the theme of 'hope', just like its title. It's a comfortable and bright Korean jazz piece that is most 'Okcheon-esque'. Alongside stable and restrained bass playing, Andy Kim's piano performance and Choi Yosep's drum play harmonize around the keyword of hope. Just as different instruments harmonize to create a single beautiful song, this track offers a comfortable melody filled with a warm and empathetic perspective, suggesting that only faith and harmony, embracing and understanding each other, can overcome these tumultuous times.
02. Melancholy
- Melancholy (哀愁) refers to 'a sorrowful grief that saddens the heart'. Composed solely of piano and bass, 'Melancholy' was created to heal us as we live through rapid change and confusion. In a world brimming with resentment and hatred, seemingly ready to burst at any moment, it asks, "Is it okay for the world my child will live in to proceed like this?" Despite its long runtime of 13 minutes, the music possesses a strong captivating power, drawing listeners in with its delicate yet grand sound, focusing entirely on the song's potent charm.
03. Tragic Love
- 'Tragic Love' is a song for those who leave, but whom we must remember, created to commemorate those who departed our side without a promise. It fully encapsulates the desire to console the heartbreaking events and unbearable sorrow that have occurred in our society. Starting with an impressively solemn piano melody and progressing with a bass performance, the song quietly enters our hearts, delivering a deep resonance. We will always remember those who have passed and await a better world. We hope this track will be remembered for a long time as a quiet melody of comfort for all of us who share the sorrows of our time.
04. Moon Dance
- This track is a 2024 remastered version of the song included in the 1st full-length album [Thank You], released in 2016. With the serene Jeju Island and its night sea as its theme, it's a piece where you can enjoy comfortable melodies and fantastic performances by bass, piano, and drums. It features beautiful, gentle, breeze-like melodies alongside jazz's inherent free improvisations. The bass solo appearing in the mid-section is a particular highlight of this song, and the remastered version, reborn with high-quality sound and balance, is also a key point to listen carefully for.
05. Morning
- 'Morning', first included in the 2015 mini-album [Koreatown], is the most cheerful and fastest-tempo track on this album, remastered and included alongside 'Moon Dance'. It allows listeners to experience the cheerful and rhythmic swing inherent in jazz, akin to the feeling of morning. This song also presents a harmonious spectrum of emotions through splendid performances by bass, piano, and drums. In the latter half of this [飛上] album, let's leave all difficult and painful memories behind with 'Morning' and feel as if we are soaring, becoming one with the genre of jazz.
Okcheon's 4th album [飛上] is structured to begin with hope and conclude with a lighthearted feeling, as if riding the wind and flying through the sky, after passing through melancholy, sorrow, and comfort. One can appreciate his seasoned, stable bass playing and well-structured producing. Although all tracks are instrumental, they contain deep resonance and beautiful melodies that are palpable even without lyrics.
His albums still largely adhere to the original one-take jazz recording method. Okcheon's 4th full-length album [飛上], armed with the most Korean sentiment and emotional jazz, is a work that allows us to glimpse not only his warm perspective on the world but also his evolved musical efforts. He poured all his energy into embodying the seed of hope in his music, and we hope this seed will spread widely across the world, allowing all listeners to experience a moment of soaring high into the blue sky.
