Witness The Dream
In the title 'Witness of a Dream,' we can think of the universe seen in a dream, the sea spread out in the air, or the experience of flying like a bird. We have all witnessed the spectacle of dreams. While encountering places we have never reached. There is no justification in dreams. The land becomes the sky, or we wake up crying as if we shared eternal love with a stranger in a dream. Things that are familiar but unfamiliar. A place I've never reached. What kind of scenery does the place you reached in your dream have?
Singer-songwriter Ryang-Yu, who indulges in the vague and beautiful, has sung various styles of music as a blues, pop, and jazz singer since 2015. His musical taste, which started with old pop music coming from the radio, expanded to the music of the indie scene in the 2000s from his family's record collection. And he started writing songs. He sang melodies into the microphone of his headset and captured the stories in his heart. In 2022, he participated as a featured vocalist in Kim Mok-in's [Saved Landscape], and released his debut EP [Witness of a Dream] based on the songs he created since 2021.
The EP [Witness of a Dream] begins with the synth-pop "Carnival" with a beat that makes you want to do an 'inner dance' in a lonely bedroom. "Carnival" gracefully sings about 'revenge fantasies' with the voice of a mature woman that contrasts with the fresh and cute melody. The following "Moon" sings about the distance from a past lover, comparing it to the distance from the moon that neither moves away nor gets closer. The abyss of heartbreak is depicted in sound with synth sounds that sound like countless stars pouring down. "Symmetry" is a song written by reflecting on the angelic singing heard in a dream. He starts singing in a clear voice, but as the song progresses to the second half, it transforms into a song filled with madness. The pre-released "A Suppressed Alien" is a song that starts from the assumption that 'humans may be aliens if you know them'. Perhaps we have forgotten how to float and how to fly because we are suppressed by order, gravity, and other factors that suppress humans? The last track, "Anbandegi," is the only folk-oriented song. "One day, I stayed up all night in Anbandegi, Gangwon-do to see the stars. It is a song recorded to preserve the memory of that day for a long time." The EP [Witness of a Dream] was completed with the two producers Lee Ho-seok and Piano Shoegazer, and the foundation of the sound was firmly laid with the performances of veteran performers Lee Dong-jun (bass) and Oh Hyung-seok (drums).
“When I first heard the demo of ‘A Suppressed Alien,’ I remember my heart sank and I stopped walking because of the unfamiliar, sad, and beautiful feeling. I was honored to be able to work with Ryang-Yu on good songs, and I am happy that the work I had been preparing for a long time is coming out into the world. I also remember talking a lot about what era and what world to draw, and researching by exchanging related movies and albums. I hope that many people will be able to swim through a deep and sad river-like universe with Ryang-Yu's music. (Piano Shoegazer)”
“‘Carnival’ is a bedroom pop that is good to listen to while lying in bed. Ryang-Yu's dreamy tone, which is still unable to escape from the dream, is contained in the refreshing rhythm of 120 bpm that wakes you up in the morning. ‘Anbandegi’ is the only acoustic track on this EP, salvaged from Ryang-Yu’s practice pieces. It contains a crude yet sophisticated dual atmosphere. If you take apart and savor the lyrics, you can feel Ryang-Yu's simple heart about love. (Lee Ho-seok/Singer-songwriter)”
