Songs retrieved from the brook of poetry
- A small encounter between “Summer of Thought” and contemporary Korean poetry:
Following 《Summer of Thought》(2009), 《Got》(2012), 《Back Into the Forest》(2016), 《The Republic of Trees》(2019), and 《Hand》(2022), “Summer of Thought” presents its sixth sound-piece and second non-regular project album, 《A Brook》.
《A Brook》 is a title crafted to be read as 'a song from within a poem,' or 'the edge of a brook made of poetry.' It is a collection of attempts to transform the full or partial texts of works by poets Moon Tae-joon, Shin Hae-wook, Yoo Hee-kyung, Jang Seok-nam, Lee Hye-mi, Min Gu, Hwang In-chan, and Kim Bok-hee into lyrics, extracting the auditory linguistic rhythms and textures felt from them and molding them into music.
The musician considers these songs comparable to the work of painting a landscape: placing a small canvas before a poem, which stands as a grand landscape held within the eyes, and painting what is seen in their own way. While possessing figurative elements, the aim was not to maximally resemble the original landscape. Rather, it is thought to be closer to the act of creating, experiencing, and conveying the experience of seeing the 'space between' by placing the landscape and its painting side by side. In that sense, these songs are not so much “poems that became songs” as they are “songs from poetry” or “songs salvaged from poetry.”
The original sources of the poems are as follows. (The titles of the songs are all the same as the titles of the poems.)
