THE SOLUTIONS is a self-proclaimed 'hard-working band'. As soon as they formed the team around guitarist Naru and vocalist Park Sol, they released their first album [THE SOLUTIONS] in the summer of 2012 with the two singles 'Sounds of the universe' and 'Talk, Dance, Party For Love' as a starting signal. Since then, regular albums and EPs have been released at intervals of no less than 1 year and no more than 2 years. The singles that filled in between don't even need to be counted. Even Corona, which dampened the enthusiasm of most musicians on Earth, couldn't stop them. Even member Naru released his solo work after 11 years in the meantime. There was nothing else that was swag.
However, I was a little concerned that the saturation of swag had changed. Naru's solo EP [Grayed Out], released in the fall of 2021, had the catchphrase 'Faded memories rediscovered in a gray city'. It was Naru, calmer and more pathetic than ever, comforting himself for having survived today. The Solutions' EP [TIME], released in the spring of the following year, sealed the subtle suspicion. It was unfamiliar but understandable enough to see them longing for the unstoppable years and the past youth. Time flowed equally for everyone, and The Solutions, who had soared as rookies, had already become a 12-year-old band.
The twist happens here. The Solutions' hidden punch, which seemed to flow naturally into the next stage of life as led by time and gravity, soared like an active volcano. It's their third full-length album [N/A], released after 10 years. Anyone who felt that the album cover, which seemed to depict an unknown creature, was unusual will not be disappointed with the first song on the album, 'N/A'. In the moment when a nostalgic LP noise and a deep melody seem to continue, the song immediately changes its expression with a scream-like performance that is clearly not human. Just when you get used to the recklessly rushing rhythm, there is a brief improvisation, and then how about the ending that suddenly ends as if it had fallen off a cliff? I can't figure it out at all.
The album [N/A] is a new game that The Solutions proposes by laying out all the cards they have had from the beginning without hiding anything. The keyword 'Not Applicable' or 'Not Available', which means 'not applicable' or 'unmeasurable', contains a light warning that it will repeat pushing and pulling with the listener throughout the album. This is a world of a completely different color that only those who see the question 'Would you like to end the game now?' on a screen that has turned all gray and boldly press 'NO' can meet.
The album flows without easily predicting the next moment. The clear melodies and overwhelming exhilaration that those who have watched The Solutions love captivate the ears ('Superstition', 'ATHENA'), and then industrial or chiptune sounds that have not been easily heard until now pour out like vomit. ('三', 'Damn U') The three short interludes inserted as if dividing the album into chapters were each worked on by Naru, Kwon Ohkyung, and Park Sol. The songs, filled with each other's personality, feel like they exist to show off how huge and solid an organism the band The Solutions has become, rather than changing the flow or atmosphere of the album, as is often the role of interludes. In fact, almost every song on the album boasts its own punch line, so it's so breathtaking that you have to take a break like that in the middle.
All the songs on [N/A] run wholeheartedly towards their goals. It is significant that all of these movements ultimately aim for revolution and experimentation. The four members literally chew, tear, taste, and enjoy the band The Solutions as they please in the album [N/A]. The resulting joy and pleasure explode and feel as if they can be grasped at any moment throughout the album. Now, all that remains is for this heat to reach the public. It doesn't seem like it will be that difficult. It's harder not to notice such a hot and fierce sound than to notice it.
